Earnings spotlight: Ross Stores
Ross Stores (ROST, $148.96) is one of several retailers on the earnings calendar, with the company slated to disclose its fourth-quarter results after Tuesday's close. Analysts, on average, expect ROST to report earnings of $1.65 per share, up 26% year-over-year (YoY), on revenue of $5.8 billion (+11.4% YoY).
UBS Global Research analyst Jay Sole expects a "solid report" from Ross Stores, and is targeting higher earnings per share (EPS) of $1.68 on revenue of $5.9 billion. The consumer spending environment for retailers remains lackluster but some are performing better than others, Sole says. Off-price retailers, in particular, could gain market share due in part due to consumers' beliefs that they "offer the best value for money," the analyst adds.
Sole recently updated the consumer discretionary stock to Neutral (the equivalent of Hold) from Sell, given "less risk to ROST's long-term earnings outlook." Most analysts are more upbeat. Of the 24 covering the stock tracked by S&P Global Market Intelligence, 13 say it's a Strong Buy, five have it at Buy, five rate it a Hold and one has it at Sell. This works out to a consensus Buy recommendation.

Earnings spotlight: Broadcom
The Magnificent 7 stocks tend to get all the attention when it comes to outperforming tech names, which means chipmaker Broadcom's (AVGO, $1,300.49) impressive year-over-year gains have largely flown under the radar. Indeed, the tech stock is up roughly 130% over the past 12 months.
Will a positive earnings reaction keep the wind at Broadcom's back? Wall Street will find out when the company unveils its fiscal first-quarter earnings report after Thursday's close.
"Continued AI growth and an optimization of the VMware portfolio should be offset by ongoing weakness in Storage, Broadband, and Enterprise Networking," says Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Christopher Rolland (Positive, the equivalent of Buy), who is targeting fiscal Q1 EPS of $10.55 for Broadcom.
Industry analysts, meanwhile, anticipate earnings of $10.29 per share (-0.4% YoY) on revenue of $11.7 billion (+31.5% YoY).
Earnings spotlight: Costco Wholesale
Costco Wholesale (COST, $743.89) is another noteworthy retail stock on the earnings calendar. The membership warehouse company will report its fiscal second-quarter results after Thursday's close.
Analysts, on average, expect Costco to disclose earnings of $3.62 per share (+9.7% YoY) on $59.2 billion in revenue (+9.2% YoY).
COST's earnings report will likely "showcase the consistency of its model," says UBS Global Research analyst Michael Lasser (Buy). "The company has already demonstrated that it stands to gain in all sorts of environments. It performed better when the consumer was stretched by inflation. Now, it's seeing the benefits of an upturn in discretionary categories ahead of other retailers."
